Richway Early 80's TV Ads

I've waited quite awhile for these, but looking back you have to admit that pretty much any TV from the early 80's was pretty cheesy. Hope you enjoy!

Richway Back to School ad from Fall of 1982.

Is this Lake Lanier or Lake Allatoona? Remember, Richway was headquartered in the old Rich's building the whole time even after Federated bought them, so an ad featuring a local man at a local lake was not unlikely.

Also, maybe I'm imagining it, but I swear I recall a Richway ad from the late 1980's playing the intro part of Laura Branigan's "Gloria". Since using pop songs in ads is nothing unusual today, I wonder if my memory served me right. I was a little kid then. Thanks, J, for the heads up on these!

  1. I remember seeing those commercials with the "We don't look like a discount store, but our price tags give us away", and probably saw both of these commercials several times when originally aired. Note that in the second one with the guy near the lake, the underwear advertised are briefs, and many guys wore them then. Few young guys wear those nowadays, and most wear boxers, with a few wearing boxer-briefs.

It would be interesting to see a lot more ads to check out the fashions being promoted, and electronics as well.

I never got any clothing from Richway when I was a kid, to my knowledge, but we bought a lot of things from the one on Cobb Parkway back in the 70s and early 80s.

  2. Wow, I'm from Georgia. This blog is awesome. I'd love to see some more updates, and especially one on the Gwinnett County "Incredible Universe" that hung around for a few years in the late 90's. Sorry that I can't contribute anything but a few fragmented memories on that one.

  3. The boy at the lake could very well be in the Atlanta area. I don't have an answer, but it is a good guess. I was a big Richway shopper as a kid during that time. :) The Richway I remember going to a lot was at Jimmy Carter Blvd, and Hwy 29 (Lawrenceville Hwy) this was where Gwinnett County line began just beyond Stone Mountain.

  4. Target stole its look from Richway. Used to shop the one off Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.

  5. i'm ashamed to say this but my brother and i were busted stealing in richway in ohhhhhhh, about 1985 i guess. i "aquired" a tape of pyromania and the bro got himself some quiet riot. it was all pretty temporary though. we got right to the door and were promptly led to the back and turned in. this particular richway was in west palm beach on military trail and forest hill blvd. even tought it isn't the greatest memory or the best charactor trait to reveal ....i still loved going in there and just looking around. for hours and hours that's what we did. i'm heartsick to see that everything that i grew up with is either dying, dead or gone. i can just pile richway on that list.i hate corporations....they spend so much time making you like them...even love them and in the blink of an eye.....you mean absolutely nothing to them when compared to the bottom line and the share holders. sorry for the rant.

  6. Oh my gosh, I had totally forgotten about Richway! I used to LOVE to go there. Especially when I turned 16 and got my license it was my little get away at night! I would go to the one on Briarcliff Road. I thought it was so awesome to go in there and look at everything!
